Introduction

The purpose of this website is to help inform volunteers and participating organizations of the goals and objectives of this program. In addition to this we are hoping to make it easy for the many volunteers to take part by having an automated signup and notification process.

Service in the true spirit of Sikhism

The Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen, concept was developed in the summer of 2007 when a group of like minded individuals got together and wanted to help with feeding those in need in Vancouver and do so by encouraging Sikh youth and organizations to volunteer their time and services.

The practice of langar – the communal kitchen and seva – the selfless service of humanity; philosophies taught by our first Guru, Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji many hundreds of years ago. For the Sikh community, this project is not missionary in nature, instead it is an opportunity for us to extend this true Sikh spirit of helping those in need regardless of caste, colour, creed, and economic status.

Furthermore, given the economic success of our community in the Lower Mainland, this is an opportunity for us to reach out in the true spirit of Sikhism and give back to the community by providing hot and healthy meals for those who can not provide for themselves.

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji, our first Guru, laid the foundation of Sikhism on Seva: the selfless service of humanity; through ‘Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen’, we take this universal philosophy to the world!

Guru Nanak’s Free Kitchen: Vancouver

This first free kitchen event took place in November/December 2007 and was a six day program that attracted hundreds of volunteers and most importantly we are proud to say it did make a real difference that week to those in need. Subsequent events have been planned for the first Friday and Saturday of every month as of January 2008.

The Sikh Community has been very successful in Canada, and in true spirit of Guru Nanak Dev Ji's teachings, it’s time to give back and help those in need in our society.

No one specific organization is heading this project. This project is a collective effort by the entire Sikh community.
